CHAPTER 6: the par-tay

The Par-tay…

Friday night finally arrived. Rosa had wisely decorated and furnished the mansion when building was finished; unlike the mostly barren Castle Vladimir. Oil paintings graced the walls and sumptuous furniture was scattered tastefully throughout the “public” rooms. Only the Scarlet Chamber, where they slept, played, and often fed was more ornate. Mai Ling Vagin and Donald McDougall had kept their promise to tell no-one of the night’s festivities. Donnie told friends he was going home to Edinburgh for the holiday while Ling had simply maintained her silence regarding any plans. Perfect. They both had vehicles at their disposal, so Ian gave them explicit directions - separately of course - to find their way on the half hour commute. Disposing of the cars would lend credence that the pair had left the area…forever.

Ian sped home on pins and needles, excitement racing up and down his spine. Time to parrrr-tayyy!!!!! The mansion was brightly lit for the first time, inside and out. Rosa did not care for electric illumination but conceded that if she left it or plumbing, or other modern touches out, that she would attract the wrong kind of attention. Nosy attention. Being able to see in darkness as easily as a human in light, she eschewed modernity. It was as soulless as she.

Ian burst through the door and told the empty foyer to get ready as the guests would be there within the hour. He knew they heard him, just as he sensed them.

At 9:15 PM, Donnie’s headlamps could be seen as he made his way down the narrow drive. He pulled into the circular driveway and parked behind Ian’s Fiat. The place was huge. This would be fun. Donnie took the granite steps to the front door three at a time. He had showered, dressed in khakis and a proper button-down, and had even tamed his shock of red hair. He wondered if he might get five minutes alone time with the Prof again. He had been thinking of excuses of why they might be able to slip away together, on the drive here. He knew he shouldn't be thinking about sex right now. He was here for dinner and drinks for Pete's sake.

The door opened as he was about to tug on the huge brass knocker, and he stood looking down on Theresa. Her blue eyes danced with mischief as she introduced herself and led Donnie deeper into the house. Ian joined them and told Donnie it was alright, his wife knew what was what and did not mind, even enjoyed watching sometimes. Donnie could not believe his luck. A few minutes later, the crunch of tires on the crushed seashell drive announced the arrival of Ling. Ian excused himself to answer the door, reappearing a minute later with Ling in tow. She stopped when she saw Donnie, an unspoken question on her lips.

“Do not be alarmed, child,” said Rosa, who appeared directly behind Ling and Ian. “The other guests will arrive shortly,” she lied.
